Yaacov Agam – From the Depths of Time

Yaacov Agam’s work unfolds within a constant tension between depth and surface, between the static and the dynamic, between what is immediately visible and what is revealed only over time. As one of the pioneers of kinetic and optical art, Agam challenges the notion of the artwork as a closed, finished object, proposing instead an open experience – an ongoing process of discovery, transformation, and movement.
The notion of “from the depths” in Agam’s work extends beyond the physical dimension. It points toward a cognitive and spiritual depth, toward multiple layers of meaning that cannot be grasped in a single glance. Colors, lines, and shifting structures operate as a field of gradual revelation: each change of angle, each movement of the viewer in space, unveils a different composition. The work does not present a single truth, but rather a mutable relationship between the viewer and what appears before their eyes.
Kinetic art, which emerged on the international stage in the aftermath of World War II, sought to break away from the boundaries of traditional painting and sculpture by introducing time, motion, and viewer participation into the artwork. Artists such as Victor Vasarely, Jesús Rafael Soto, and the members of the GRAV group worked within a universal modernist framework; yet in Agam’s work an additional, distinctive layer emerges – a profound connection to Jewish thought. Concepts of cyclical time, multiplicity of perspectives, and the absence of a fixed image resonate with Kabbalistic and Talmudic ideas, which understand reality as a continuous process of revelation rather than a final, static state.
Time is a fundamental element in Agam’s practice. Unlike traditional painting, which fixes a single moment, his works exist only within a temporal continuum. They depend on movement, rhythm, and the viewer’s engagement. Time is not merely a condition of viewing, but an active material – the very force that allows the artwork to come into being. Each moment of observation is unique, and each return to the work generates a different experience.
The exhibition “From the Depths of Time” invites the viewer into a slow, sustained meeting with Agam’s work – an encounter in which gaze, body, and time are interwoven, revealing a depth that is in constant transformation.
