Food is the most mundane activity, and the deepest. It is an existential necessity, a loving gesture, a mechanism of memory, a cultural language, and often a battlefield. Through food we survive – and through food we tell who we are.
The exhibition Food / Life asks to examine the space in which the biological and the cultural intertwine. The act of eating, a seemingly simple action, carries with it layered meanings: familiality and ceremonialism, absence and abundance, control and surrender, pleasure and guilt. The body meets the material, the material is charged with emotion, memory and identity.
The artworks in the exhibition vary between everyday materials and symbolic imagery, between the kitchen to the dining table, between an intimate act to a collective activity. Some deal with cooking, others with consumption or lack thereof; some fill with nostalgia and warmth, others place a mirror to systems of power, finances and culture.
In a world where food is documented, branded and consumed at a dizzying pace, the exhibition invites you to slow down. It suggests taking a moment in the meeting between the mouth and the eye, between physical and emotional hunger. To examine how food connects private life and collective history, and how it reflects our relationships with body, time and environment.
Food / Life is not intending to define one answer, but rather “set the table”. A place where memories, materials and images collect, to inspire new thought about what enters our bodies – and what stays with us long after.
